IBS affects 1 in every 5 people in the UK, and the low FODMAP diet is the number one recommendation for symptom management. Gutfulness is a nutritious and convenient snack for those that suffer with digestive symptoms living busy everyday lives.

The Story Behind Gutfulness

MARILIA CHAMON, GUT HEALTH & IBS SPECIALIST

I developed IBS 15 years ago after an episode of food poisoning - overnight I went from being able to eat all sorts of foods to not being able to tolerate them at all. I was given a list of foods I should and should not eat to keep my symptoms under control and quickly it became extremely difficult and frustrating to find a suitable snack on the supermarket shelves. I remember thinking, “how is it possible that among hundreds of products, there’s nothing suitable for me?!”.

Fast forward 15 years and my clinical experience made me realise a lot of people felt the same way so I decided to launch a snack to fill the gap in the market.

  • Gutfulness is made with naturally gluten-free ingredients and has been tested by a third party lab confirming it contains less than 20ppm of gluten however it is made in a factory that handles gluten. Made in a factory that also handles tree nuts, soya and milk.

  • Protein is the main nutrient for growth and cell repair in the body, it provides the building blocks, also known as amino acids, for our organs, muscles, skin, nails, and hair. It helps cells communicate, helps with the transmission of nerve signals, makes up blood cells, and is an essential component to make all hormones. Your body needs protein even if you live a sedentary life, if you exercise you need more protein to help muscle recovery and growth. From clinical experience I know that most people don’t meet their minimum protein intake.

  • The FODMAP Friendly Certification Program, incorporating the FODMAP Friendly logo, is a globally registered certification trademark certifying low FODMAP food products that have been laboratory tested to be low in FODMAPs. It is designed to enable people with symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) who are following a low FODMAP diet to easily identify suitable food products. This easily recognisable “FODMAP Friendly” logo assists people with IBS symptoms to shop and eat with confidence.

  • FODMAPs (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols) are a collection of short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols naturally found in foods or food additives.

  • When consumed FODMAPs can be poorly absorbed in the small intestine and pass through to the large intestine, where they are fermented by gut bacteria, resulting in gas production. FODMAPs are also highly osmotic, meaning they attract water into the large intestine, which can alter how quickly bowels move. Those processes can result in symptoms such as excess wind, abdominal bloating and distension, abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea, or a combination of both.

  • Most protein bars use high FODMAP ingredients such as chicory root fibre, inulin, xylitol, maltitol, dates, honey.

  • Most protein bars in the market claim to be natural but contain ingredients that create havoc in our gut health. For example, Aspartame and Sucralose negatively impact the balanced of good and bad bacteria in the gut. Emulsifiers promote gut inflammation and permeability. Emulsifiers go by many names, some of the most common ones used in food products are Carrageenan (E407), Polysorbate (E432 to E436), Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (E468) and Citric Acid Esters (E472c).

  • You can have as many Gutfulness as you like but if you suffer from IBS I recommend one bar per sitting to avoid FODMAP stacking.

  • At the moment Gutfulness can be shipped to the UK and the following countries: Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, France, Germany, Guernsey, Jersey, Monaco, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Vatican City, Turkey, USA and Australia.
